Physical Activity As a Therapy For Autistic Children

While parents and educators of autistic children often realize the benefits of education and routine, quite often the benefits of physical activity and sports are overlooked. Some parents might think that their child is simply not capable for participating in a sports program. Or they might just feel too busy and overwhelmed with the daily routine of taking care of an autistic child, and think the time spent on sport is not as valuable as other programs. However, physical exercise has been shown to greatly improve the lives of autistic children and to improve their behaviour as well.


Autistic children, like all children with a disability are more prone to avoid sports and thus run the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Perhaps the greatest risk however, is simply not having the opportunity to reap the benefits that regular physical exercise can provide, such as improved endurance, a chance to develop fine and gross motor skills and a self-confidence boost. A right exercise program can also introduce the autistic child to a social environment and a chance to interact with his peers. Physical exercise is a proven way to help autistic children (and even non-autistic ones) to burn off excess energy and be able to focus better on their school work or other learning opportunities.


Many autistic children might not be able to participate in a team sport, due to limited social ability or the fear of physical contact with others. Individual sports might be more suitable to them. Parents have found their autistic children to love and excel in swimming, tennis, golf, skating or bike riding. You know your child best and what physical activities would be best suited to his/her individual temperament and interests. Exercise also allows the autistic child who has problems with self-control to have the opportunity to yell and get out any built up energy.


Autistic children often have trouble with sensory input. Sports naturally help to unite the senses, by provided many natural opportunities to run, climb, balance and touch. To encourage your child to begin enjoying his body and exploring his senses a good idea is to create simple obstacles and sensory items right in your home. Things like crawl-through tunnels, ball pits and ceiling-mounted swings are relatively inexpensive and provide a much-needed release for the autistic child. If you are looking to create a "sensory room" for your autistic child to enjoy physical exercise right in your home, there are many products available for that purpose. Things like monkey bars, indoor therapy gyms, rock climbing walls or simple gym rings all provide many opportunities for exercise right at home. The physically active autistic child is better focused, more self-controlled and better able to deal with sensory stimulation.


As busy as parents with autistic children are, the importance of regular physical exercise and sports should not be overlooked. Rather, think of it as yet another form of therapy, make it fun and participate right along with your child to improve the health of the whole family!

Instant Self Realization

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the top of Maslow's pyramid of Self-Actualization


Is there anything more interesting than people? Perhaps just one thing: yourself?


I think the penny dropped for me on this one when a particularly entertaining sociology lecturer at college first started to explain Abraham Maslow and his hierarchical ideas of self-actualization. Wow, at the age of 20 after reading so many different books and having spent so many hours studying an incredible array of subjects at school, I had never heard that the human animal and its behavior patterns could be so neatly packaged in this at-a-glance digestible pyramid with brightly colored bands of decreasing size, realistically equating to the idea that as you go up things get tougher or at least there is less to share around. Apart from the visual attractiveness I also liked the idea that Maslow's analysis pretty much seemed to hold water. I was delighted to now have such a user-friendly frame of reference for doing my people watching. As an added bonus I found the whole explanation personally enlightening.


If you share the notion that what is good for one must be good for all I was convinced right then and there that such knowledge should be a ready part of standard education well before college age.


Now, a number of years passed by and the people watching habit never went away partly because of the constant but perhaps subconscious need of my own to try and understand my own behavior and motivations apart from my unabating interest in everybody around me. However, along with that passage of time my personal antenna was increasingly alert to that bit on the top of Maslow's pyramid and even what might be in the unmentionable blank territory outside Maslow's pyramid.


Many books, discussions, meetings with learned men and women and various shall we say "self-expansion" courses down the road and I stumbled across something that I hardly thought was even possible to look for. I suppose that the awareness of what I am leading up to was being inhibited by my adherence to giving undue importance to the traditional passage of time. It was really the final piece of the jigsaw for me because if I truly believed that everything was possible, as I did, then I would have to also consider dispensing with the idea that everything and anything had to be explained in tandem with a time continuum.


I imagine that while I was trying to climb up to the top of that comprehension pyramid I probably clambered on up with the not-very-lateral-thinking notion that the next pyramid would be right there waiting for me in the process of time but wait on... That whole less-than-real way of thinking came to a juddering halt when I realized the absolute and incontrovertible fact that there is only ever NOW! That is reality. All other times are merely expedient ways in which we formulate our behavior patterns from the very beginning of the physical needs on upwards. There is only, there was only and there will only ever be now! The splitting up of past present and future are merely useful creations of our minds.


That explodes the myth of a process, that explodes the myth of hierarchy, indeed that explodes the myth that perfection or paradise is somewhere else. No, it is right here and now. From procedural self-actualization to instant self-realization and of course, I feel even more strongly that this too should be part of everybody's standard education. What You Need to Know About Thai Dowry

So you have finally found your true love in the Land of Smiles-but you've got one major question before taking the big plunge.

"How much dowry do I need to pay for my bride?" is a question that always pops up along with the other requirements for Marriage in Thailand. The Thai dowry system, which is more commonly known as Sin Sod, is deeply rooted in Thai culture. It is a way of honoring your bride's parents for raising their daughter well. This is also a way of showing that you are financially capable of taking care of your Thai bride throughout your married life, because her parents tend to consider financial security as basis for the marriage.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DOWRY

You will need to negotiate with your bride's parents regarding the amounts of the Sin Sod and Tong Mun. Tong Mun, which means gold engagement, is 24-karat gold that you give to your wife-to-be. The rule of thumb is, the higher the amount of the gold, the better. This is similar to the giving an engagement ring in the West.

Then there's the Sin Sod, or the actual dowry, which can include anything of value, but usually it is about the money. Most Westerners get confused with the amount of dowry that they have to pay to their Thai bride's parents, as dowry prices are set at unbelievably high amounts ranging from 100,000- 1,000,000 baht.

One important thing that you should keep in mind when discussing Thai dowry is that its amount is based on your Thai fiancee's status, education, occupation and other related social background information (such as her virginity). An average middle-class, university-educated Thai lady deserves a dowry of 100,000- 300,000 baht. A dowry of a million baht for an uneducated lady of modest means is just ridiculous. Thai dowry prices fall drastically if your bride-to-be has been previously married, already has children, or is not a virgin anymore. In fact in most of these instances, no dowry deserves to be paid.

Thai dowry, however, is usually symbolic in nature and will normally be returned to the married couple after the wedding, so as to help them start on their new life. When registering your Marriage in Thailand, there is really no need to show proof that you have paid dowry, as it is presented during the actual wedding ceremony itself.

In summary, Marriage in Thailand can be the best experience you will ever have, but it would be best to inform yourself as much as possible about all its traditions and requirements. It would be best to engage the services of a reputable Thai law firm who can assist you with Marriage Registration in Thailand and even drafting a Prenuptial Agreement to secure your assets prior to your union with your Thai fiancée.
